Food-Birmingham and the UK

During Summer 1, we will continue to learn about Birmingham and the UK. We will be using our senses to explore different types of foods available in Birmingham and the UK. The children will get to taste a range of foods and use the foods in a fun and creative way.

We will focus on three stories including; Gruffalo Crumble and other recipes, Kitchen Disco and Food Faces. We look forward to making some fruit kebabs to represent the Gruffalo's tusks!

Seedlings Topic
Birmingham and the UK

The topic is closely linked with the 'Understanding the World' area of learning, within the Seedling curriculum. We will be exploring some iconic landmarks, such as Big Ben in London, the Birmingham Bull and Cadbury World. We will have fun role playing Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and introduce the characters Peppa Pig and Paddington Bear.

Peppa and Paddington will be coming home with the children, and we hope you will take them out and about with you at the weekend. We would love to see some photos of the places you visit!

The story we will focus on in Literacy is 'Peppa Goes to London'. We also hope to make our own class story book using the photos of Peppa with the children at home.

The topic is closely linked with the 'Expressive Art and Design' area of learning, within the Seedling curriculum. We will be exploring imaginative, small world play and performing arts. We are excited to host the M&M theatre company, who will come into school to perform 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' to the children.

In our Literacy session we will read the story Snow White by Campbell and explore the interactive book. We will also share the story via PowerPoint accompanied by props which will take the children on a sensory journey of the story.

In PSED we will explore the concept of 'managing self', developing our independence skills. We will play Paddington hide and seek in Maths, exploring prepositions when searching for the bear.

In our Expressive Art and Design session, the children will make a positive artistic contribution to a large scale Snow White character which will be displayed in our mark-making area of the classroom.

In PSED, we will explore emotions and feelings and how these link to the dwarf characters. We will also make magic mirrors.

Autumn 2 2023

Seedlings Topic

A Victorian Christmas

This topic is closely linked with the 'Understanding the World' area of learning. We will be equipping children with the knowledge and skills to find out about the world around them, exploring and investigating how things work, getting to know about other people, places and aspects of the environment. We will be paying particular attention to events in the past.

We will be exploring some Victorian traditions, homes, toys and how they celebrated Christmas in comparison to modern Christmas celebrations.

In our Literacy session we will read the stories 'Pip and Posy The Christmas Tree' and 'Oh Christmas Tree'.

In our Expressive Art and Design session, we will be creating traditional Christmas  Victorian surprises to sell at our Christmas Fair. We will learn some Victorian nursery rhymes and explore some old music.

Weeks 1-3 in September will focus on transitioning the children into school and a 'settling in' period.

Topic is closely linked to Expressive Art and Design (EAD), Communication and Language and Literacy.

Our topic for Autumn 1 is 'Painters' and Bunnies class will focus on painting in the style of Frida Kahlo during our EAD lessons. We will introduce the topic through sensory explorations of paint and bright colours. Each week the children will explore different sensory elements of Frida's style of painting and will create their own 'Proud to Be' self-portraits. We will explore leaf printing adding the creations to our self-portraits as well as exploring contrasting colours through marble painting. Our final product will be displayed in the classroom.
