Maths at Dame Ellen Pinsent

Our Vision

to create learning opportunities for children to access and develop their mathematical abilities through a thematic, real life, active approach that will embed understanding, create fluency, support mastery and produce confident, enthusiastic problem solving practitioners.


Maths is an important part of our curriculum and is taught in all classes.

Many of the activities are practical and children learn about a range of concepts such as:

  • Number and Place Value
  • Addition
  • Subtraction
  • Shape & Pattern
  • Position, Direction & Problem Solving
  • Time & Sequencing
  • Money and sequencing
  • Statistics and Data Handling
  • Measures & Fractions
  • Maths in the Environment

Staff modify the programmes of study to give all pupils relevant and appropriately challenging work at each key stage.

Where possible real life situations and experiences are used by teachers to make the children's learning more meaningful. Every term we have a STEM day where we have practical activities that covers Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. 

National Curriculum

The current Curriculum for Mathematics came into force in September 2015. We follow this curriculum at Dame Ellen, tracking back to ensure that it meets the needs of our children. We are using a new assessment system called A2E to monitor the progress of our children. This system allows us to plan our children's progress so work is relevant but offers them opportunities to stretch and grow. 

We have also created a curriculum to bridge the gap from EYFS to A2E. This curriculum teaches the children the key skills they need and helps to bridge teh gap. 

Children in Lambs and Caterpillars follow the EYFS curriculum for Maths. This provides children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures. 


We encourage the children to work independently where possible to increase their confidence and to help embed their learning. By allowing the children time to explore maths, we are giving the them the chance to think, plan and evaluate. This is a skill that will help them when they use maths in every day situations.
